5 Things to remember when you’re feeling down

People often forget that it’s okay to not smile and feel amazing all the time. One day you can be feeling on top of the world, and the next you feel depressed. Once you hit this stage, it’s usually hard to come back. 

The good news is that it’s okay not to be okay. As someone who suffers with their mental health, I am guilty of getting into a bubble of depressions – but I have found something that helps. 

Here are 5 things to remember when you are feeling down. 

DON’T BE ASHAMED OF BEING SELFISH

It’s perfectly fine to treat yourself when you’re sad and down. Everyone has their own mental health that they need to prioritise, so there’s no shame in treating yourself. Whether it’s playing The Sims or gardening, if it makes you happy – do it! 

IT’S OKAY TO FAIL

Everyone screws up at some point in their life, and it’s great to fail. Of course it doesn’t feel great at the moment, but you search for failures and become better from it. Mistakes are normal as no one is perfect. You aren’t the only person who’s failed. 

TAKE IT EASY

Life is fast-paced and crazy at times, so remember to relax. There is never enough time in the day to do everything you want – that’s normal. Instead of exploding mentally, take a moment to relax and clear your mind. Whether it’s work or university, take a moment to breathe. 

TALK TO PEOPLE

It’s normal to have a rough patch, so let people know. You don’t have to stay silent and pretend everything is okay. You are allowed to talk to others and freak out. From simple conversations to confessions, it’ll help you in so many ways. If you need professional help, there is no shame in that. Mental health is regarded as one of the biggest problems in the UK, so people will understand. 

ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING SMALL

If you are feeling down and like nothing is going right, try starting something small. Something that you know you can accomplish to feel satisfied in yourself. It can be cleaning the house, writing a blog post or simply sending off an email. The little things in your life count towards achievements, and just by living you are achieving something marvellous.
